How Products Get Tested

Every product reviewed on this site spent at least 30 nights on the actual bed before anything was written. During that window, bedroom temperature gets logged three times each night: 10 PM, 2 AM, and wake-up. The thermometer is a digital probe unit zip-tied to the bed frame at mattress height. Watt-hour readings for powered devices go on a whiteboard on the closet door alongside the product rotation dates.

Baseline conditions are a 1994 Tucson ranch house with central HVAC set to 76°F. In summer, that setting holds the bedroom at 78 to 82°F by 9 PM. Product results are measured against that baseline, not against ideal conditions. A cooling system that only performs in a well-controlled room is not useful in this house, and the reviews say so.

Failures go in the review. If a sheet set pilled by week three, the review says week three. If a fan controller needed a firmware update to hold its Wi-Fi connection, the review names the firmware version. If a mattress topper held its shape for ten nights and compressed by week four, the review documents the timeline. A reader making a purchase decision should have the same information as someone who spent a month sleeping on the thing.

Night sweats from a hormonal or medical cause, or any diagnosed sleep disorder, are outside what a hardware review can address. A doctor is the right starting point for those situations, not a product comparison page.
